Monday’s the big day for Gitana 11!
After being put back a few days due to bad weather over the Western tip of Brittany, the skies seem to be clearing to enable the launch of the new maxi-trimaran Gitana 11. Next Monday 7th September, Yann Guichard and the Gitana Team’s shore crew will make the most of the evening’s rising tide to perform what is always a tricky manoeuvring operation.

In this way, the multihull platform should hit the water in front of the slipway in St Philibert (Morbihan) late afternoon. Her mast will be stepped straightaway and then the 77 foot trimaran will make for her home port of La Trinité-sur-Mer, immediately next door, before dusk.

Memo
The modification work to Gitana 11, which consisted of extending the trimaran by 17 feet with a view to the next Route du Rhum*, began in December 2008. A ten month refit and a team of around twenty technicians have been necessary to complete this ambitious objective. Winner of the 2006 edition, the trimaran equipped by Baron Benjamin de Rothschild is the first modified Orma multihull to see the light of day. The helm of the maxi will be entrusted to the Breton sailor, Yann Guichard, who will be competing in his first solo transatlantic aboard her.

* In order to get back to the roots of this prestigious single-handed transatlantic race between St Malo and Pointe-à-Pitre, the organisers of the race chose to open the 9th edition to G Class multihulls.
