This year however, the men of Gitana Team have upset the usual schedule. Indeed the winter refit for the MOD 70 Edmond de Rothschild Group has only taken a matter of weeks, which was just enough time for the shore crew to give the latest trimaran of the Gitana fleet a unique livery, created by the graphic designer Jean-Baptiste Epron. Sébastien Josse and his crew will be putting in their first tacks of 2012 over the coming days, before making for the latitudes of Agadir, in Morocco, where the team’s winter training is scheduled to take place.

Edmond de Rothschild Group, 2nd in the Extreme Sailing Series 2011

This year ultimate victory just slipped from the grasp of the crew of Edmond de Rothschild Group. However, Pierre Pennec and his three crew - Christophe Espagnon, Thierry Fouchier and Hervé Cunningham certainly don’t have anything to be ashamed about in their very fine second place given the fantastic line-up that made up the fleet for this year’s Extreme Sailing Series and the intensity of this 2011 season. Winners of two Grands Prix (Oman and Nice) and unquestionably major players on the circuit with five podium places out of the nine this year, the men of Gitana Team were outpaced by Max Sirena’s Italian crew but finished ahead of the New Zealanders skippered by Dean Barker, one of the current reference teams in the sailing world.

The Extreme Sailing Series series is drawing to a close

This Saturday 10 December wasn’t a great one for the French team on Edmond de Rothschild Group. Whilst the crew of Luna Rossa put up an impressively consistent performance throughout the afternoon, with a flawless score to boot, the men of Gitana Team struggled to gain the upper hand on the race zone in Singapore. At the end of this fourth and penultimate day of the competition in this Asian leg, there is a tough penance for Pierre Pennec and his three crew. This evening they find themselves in 7th position in the provisional standing and are notably fifty-eight points shy of their adversary for the annual title. Victory for the catamaran fitted out by Baron Benjamin de Rothschild in the 2011 championship would appear to be on very shaky ground.

An action-packed day

Once again storms rolled in today to upset the programme drawn up by the race committee for the Extreme Sailing Series. However, the patience of the organisers was rewarded since five races were able to be contested in the stadium setting in Singapore, despite a capricious and particularly fluky wind both in terms of strength and direction. After a rather mediocre performance during the first two days of the competition, the men on the catamaran fitted out by Baron Benjamin de Rothschild have managed to reverse the trend, regaining a real feel for the racing and their potential. At the end of this third day, Edmond de Rothschild Group is lying in fourth place in the overall standing, eight points shy of Luna Rossa, its rival for the 2011 title. There are two days of racing left and the weekend promises to be one of high tension.

Storms laying down the law in Singapore

The ten crews currently competing in the Singapore Grand Prix have had to be patient on this second day of competition. Indeed the storms which threatened the city in southern Asia throughout the afternoon asphyxiated and then disrupted conditions on the Extreme Sailing Series racetrack, situated at the foot of the famous Singapore Flyer, the biggest Ferris wheel in the world spanning some 165 metres in diameter. Despite that, the wind finally picked up shortly after 1500 hours (local time, or GMT+8), enabling the race committee to run four races, during which the crew of Edmond de Rothschild Group proved to be less inspired than yesterday.

The pretenders out in force

Five races were able to be contested on this the opening day of the Singapore Grand Prix and the last event of the Extreme Sailing Series 2011. However, the race committee had to reckon with the vagaries of the weather and contend with the storms in order to provide the ten competing crews with the optimum sailing conditions. At the end of this first day, the Austrians on Red Bull Sailing Team have taken an early lead. The author of two race victories, just like Pierre Pennec and his men, Roman Hagara’s team was rewarded for its consistent performance. The catamaran fitted out by Baron Benjamin de Rothschild is positioned in third place in the provisional standing, just two points shy of Luna Rossa, the team’s direct rival for the title. The battle, which will crown the 2011 winner, has well and truly commenced!

The 2011 title in Edmond de Rothschild Group's sights

The ninth and final act of the Extreme Sailing Series 2011 is to begin in Singapore on Wednesday 7 December. For five days, the fleet of 40-feet one-design catamarans will do battle on a closed and rather atypical Asian race zone. Second in the overall standing prior to this final meeting of the year, just a point shy of the leaders, the crew of Edmond de Rothschild Group knows that the 2011 title is within reach and they fully intend not to let the opportunity slip by them. However, in order to do this, it is imperative that Pierre Pennec and his men rank ahead of the Italian on Luna Rossa. The battle promises to be merciless and the latter Grand Prix of the season could well turn into a duel between these two teams.

Definitive livery for the MOD Edmond de Rothschild Group

Launched on 25 October 2011, the MOD 70 Edmond de Rothschild Group returned to Gitana Teams new technical base at the Kéroman site in Lorient this Wednesday. During the past month, the team led by the skipper Sébastien Josse, has had the opportunity to sail and trial their new steed on nine occasions, some of which were shared with Michel Desjoyeaux team. This test and validation period drew to a close today with the one-designs return to the yard so as to receive her definitive livery.

The MOD 70 Edmond de Rothschild Group hits the water

In March 2010, Baron Benjamin de Rothschild ranked among the very first boat owners to commit to the new Multi One Design circuit; a design involving 70 feet one-design trimarans, whose sailing programme includes transatlantic races, tours of Europe, Round the World races with stopovers as well as city races. A year and seven months on, the project has become a reality with the launch of the MOD 70 Edmond de Rothschild Group. The fourth one-design of the Multi One Design class, this multihull forms part of a long line of Gitana craft, which have marked the marine history of the Rothschild family.
