The arrival is reminiscent of a deliverance as it brings to an end a long delivery of over 2,800 miles, made possible by the installation of a jury rig.

Indeed the skipper and his monohull equipped by Baron Benjamin de Rothschild are set to reach the port of Fremantle tonight, which will be in the early hours in Australia since the region of Perth is eight hours ahead of GMT.

Whilst the race is continuing in the Pacific, aboard Gitana Eighty activity has been reduced to the bare minimum and the telephone contact with shore crew, family and friends are punctuating the days which are leading on to the new year. It would be wrong to disguise the fact that the skipper of Gitana Eighty is finding the time long, however Yann Eliès’ accident, which has sadly animated the race over recent days, is enabling him to put the situation into perspective. Despite the weather conditions not being favourable for good speeds for the monohull equipped by Baron Benjamin de Rothschild, with Loïck likely to traverse a ridge of high pressure, the 60 footer is expected into Fremantle in the next few days.

It’s already been a week since the sailor’s Vendée Globe dreams and the hopes of Gitana Team were stopped in their tracks off the Kerguelen Islands. In a split second, after a magnificent performance over the first third of the course in this 6th edition of the solo round the world without stopovers and without assistance, the skipper had to lay down his arms following the breakage of his mast.

As such, after weighing up the situation and studying the greatest number of options available to them, Loïck Peyron and his shore crew have opted for Australia. This destination is certainly a lot further from South Africa but it is safer for the monohull in the colours of the LCF Rothschild Group. The skipper from La Baule is therefore tackling an Indian Ocean crossing under jury rig.

At the same time as these logistical aspects which are mobilising the members of Gitana Team, Loïck Peyron has been organising his life aboard. Since yesterday evening, he has been sailing under jury rig; a spar which he managed to erect after some long and exhausting hours of work on deck.

High but sad emotion at the Vendée Globe Race HQ and at Nautic (the Paris International Boat Show). Shortly after 1400 hours, Loïck Peyron informed his shore crew about Gitana Eighty's dismasting. Barely three hours later, battling with what remained of the spar to manufacture a jury rig, the skipper of the monohull equipped by Baron Benjamin de Rothschild, went over this fateful incident during a special radio session. It is worth pointing out that Loïck Peyron climbed to the top of the mast no later than yesterday and was able to perform a thorough and satisfactory check of the rig at that time.

The incident occurred shortly after 1400 hours this Wednesday 10th December, whilst Gitana Eighty was in 3rd position in a close, full-on race. Down below when the mast fell, Loïck Peyron is safe and sound.

Today, whilst the remaining fleet amounts to just twenty-four pretenders to victory now, the first monohulls are now sailing in the deep south, bound for the Kerguelen Islands which were still some 900 miles away at midday. Thanks to a favourable transition at the front of the fleet, there are now six 60 foot Imocas making up the leading group. Among them are Loïck Peyron and Gitana Eighty, who are still in fourth place at the 1600 hour ranking, 50 miles astern of the leader.

The advantage switches to the frontrunners

Almost a month of racing has already passed in the Vendée Globe 2008-2009… And whilst the vast majority of the fleet is tracing its wake in the savage seas of the Indian Ocean, the leaders are already imposing their rhythm. The various weather phenomena encountered since the start in Les Sables d'Olonne, on 9th November, had essentially favoured the chasing pack up till now, enabling them to reduce their deficit on the leaders. However, for the first time, it would seem that the advantage has switched to the leaders. As such the coming hours may well enable Loïck Peyron – 3rd at the 1600 hour ranking – and the head of the fleet – to increase their lead over their rivals. What better way to start the week aboard Gitana Eighty?
