Yann Guichard and his six crew completed the two return legs between Saint-Nazaire (Loire-Atlantic) and Sainte Marine (South Finistère) in a time of 19 hours 39 minutes and 58 seconds. The former-Elf Aquitaine III and then Laiterie de Saint-Malo, this 60-foot Open Multihull built in 1988 by the Multiplast boatyard in Vannes based on plans by Gilles Ollier was acquired by Baron Benjamin de Rothschild in 1999 to satisfy his desire for top-level competition.
Gitana IX, skippered by Thierry Duprey du Vorsent and with the Baron as a crewman, went on to contest two prestigiouos races: the Québec-Saint-Malo in 2000, in which she finished 8th, and the Challenge Mondial Assistance in 2001, where she came home in 7th place.
