Launched in 1984, the creation of Gitana VIII corresponds to that of the A Class, or the so-called Maxi, of which Baron Edmond de Rothschild was to be the founder and the first president. Gitana VIII, built according to a German Frers design, was a 71-foot monohull comprising an aluminium hull, a carbon deck and titanium winches, with the most understated and lightest of interior fit-outs for maximum efficiency. Aboard this boat, several thousand miles were covered on the racetrack, including a victory in the 1984 edition of the Nioulargue.
