In 1982, Baron Edmond de Rothschild was to come face to face with a tough, motivated competitor in the person of his son Benjamin de Rothschild. To compete with Gitana Senior, the latter had designed and built, in turn, Gitana Junior I by Swede Pelle Peterson, Gitana Junior II by Briton Ian Howlett and Gitana Junior III by Philippe Durr according to a design by Swiss naval architect Grobéty. Like twins, Gitana Senior and the Gitana Junior took part in various 6m JI events, the crews being transformed into rival brothers during the competition, but reviving the fraternal links once the finish line was crossed.
