In 1981, Baron Edmond de Rothschild wanted to take part in the Régates Royales de Cannes and entrusted the creation of his own 6m JI to the naval architects Sparkman and Stephens and the Swiss yard Egger. Christened Gitana Senior, this moulded wood monohull with a varnished freeboard gleamed so much that she earned the nickname of the ‘piano’ on the shores of Lake Geneva. Signed up for a dense programme of competitions each year, Gitana Senior took the start of the Régates Royales de Cannes several times over, along with the spring races on Lake Geneva, World and French 6m JI Cups and also European Championships. In 1986 she won the French Cup.
