In 1986, Cannes played host to the World 8m JI Cup. By happy coincidence, this particular year also marked Baron Edmond de Rothschild’s 60th birthday and so it proved too fine an opportunity not to make the start line. And so it was that Gitana Sixty came about. Designed by naval architect Jacques Fauroux and built in the Universal Yachting yard in Carros under the supervision of Jean-Hervé Mer, this elegant monohull was so polished, that together with her crew, including Baron Benjamin de Rothschild, they went on to take victory race after race and won the Cup in the process.
